Análisis geográfico de la biodiversidad en relación a las comunidades indígenas en la región amazónica de Rupununi (Guyana)

La geografía es fundamental para comprender cómo factores ambientales y humanos afectan la distribución de biodiversidad. Analizamos la distribución geográfica de la riqueza de mamíferos y árboles en la región amazónica de Rupununi, Guyana. En un área de casi 5 millones de hectáreas, se realizaron censos de especies de mamíferos y árboles durante tres años con la participación de 335 técnicos de las comunidades indígenas que habitan estos territorios. Encontramos que la riqueza de árboles disminuye con la latitud, hacia el norte de la zona de estudio, y aumenta con la distancia a aldeas donde habitan las comunidades indígenas, ríos y carreteras. Sin embargo, la riqueza de mamíferos aumenta con la longitud geográfica, hacia el este de la zona de estudio, y no varía con la latitud o con respecto a los factores humanos. Estos resultados subrayan la importancia de la distribución geográfica regional de las comunidades indígenas para comprender la distribución de la biodiversidad y así optimizar la planificación de la conservación y manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales.
