The Hump of the Parnassus: Monterone, Rigoletto and the Rationality of Evil

Abstract

In modern poetic theories, it is common to consider opera as an irrational, unrealistic genre. This is mainly due to its musical component, which is often opposed to the rationality of word and drama. However, there are many operas in which it is precisely music that gives verisimilitude to the plot. A radical case is Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, an opera where the idea of evil is treated in an original way. In this article, we will try to show that it is above all from music that Verdi manages to tackle this idea, giving rise to a true philosophy of evil that is not understood as something irrational, but as something rational that is not as far from good as we usually think.
