Abstract

The European Commission has designated WhatsApp and Apple as gatekeepers, necessitating compliance with Digital Markets Act obligations commencing March 2024. Specifically, WhatsApp is mandated to facilitate interoperability with other platforms, while Apple is required to adjust its iOS operating system to accommodate the installation of third-party app stores. These measures afford users enhanced choice but introduce challenges pertaining to security and user experience. The effectiveness of these measures in reshaping the competitive landscape within the digital market remains uncertain, raising the question of whether they will pave the way for new entrants or if established leaders such as WhatsApp and Apple will maintain their market dominance.
