Abstract

This work presents the participation of Xavier Cugat in the cinema. It has been used the analysis by recurrence, segmentation by historical periods and an approach from musicology for musical production. A conceptualization of the tropical in the cinema has been carried out during the Catalan musician's cinematographic career. The corpus of study was made up of 73 films in which the musician participated as an actor, composer and even in productions after his death. As a conclusion, we have obtained the categorization of Cugat's participation in six categories: into silent cinema, participation in sound productions, career in Hollywood musicals, figure in European cinema, foray into Spanish cinema and an indirect presence in Argentine cinema of the late 1940s. Cugat's contribution to the imaginary of the tropical in international cinema is taken for granted.
