Abstract

The production of manuscript cantatas for soprano and basso continuo by Francesco Antonio Pistocchi (1659-1726) includes just over twenty compositions preserved in numerous libraries of Europe. Six of these cantatas are in the Library of the Conservatory of Music “S. Pietro a Majella” in Naples, and most of them are known only through this source. The article provides for the first time the complete poetic texts of these six cantatas (transcribed directly from musical manuscripts), together with their translation into Spanish. In addition, the case of the cantata Dal grand’occhio del cielo is analyzed. Such cantata, based on its textual and musical characteristics, is difficult to attribute to Pistocchi. The appendix provides the score of this cantata in a critical edition.
