Cinco Canções Nordestinas do Folklore Brasileiro by Ernani Braga: a musical analysis and its connection with extra-musical elements

Abstract

This paper was created with the aims to analyze Ernani Braga's song cycle, Cinco Canções Nordestinas do Folclore Brasileiro and extrapolate its musical elements to an extra-musical meaning that supports the understanding and interpretation of the work. To contextualize, it first presents a brief reference to nationalism in Latin American art songs and Brazilian song. It is concluded that the combination of different ingredients gives it a particular character, which highlights the beauty of its indigenous and regional melodies that, along with harmonies from Western music and a classic vocal performance, produce a unique sound.
