Abstract

In Toledo, outside the walls, about 500 meters from the Puerta del Cambrón, down to the Vega Baja, is the Hermitage of El Cristo de la Vega, famous for housing a peculiar image of the Crucified, related to a Toledo legend that José Zorrilla put in romantic verse. It is the story of Inés de Vargas, who to demonstrate that the forgetful captain of spearmen Diego Martinez, made him a promise of marriage on his return from Flanders, put Christ himself as a witness.

This tradition, very popular since the mid-nineteenth century, was taken to the lyrical theater twice, as well as inspiring a string quartet and two commercial films.
